Portrait Series: Luca Markó

Luca Markó is a talented visual artist who we have known for quite some time. Her analog photos capture the ambiance we typically cherish in our daily lives – the timelessness, simplicity, and sincerity of moments spent at home. After completing two years of aesthetics studies at ELTE, she pursued both the undergraduate and graduate programs in media design at MOME. Luca delved into creating video installations, short animations, photographs, and objects but photography became the center stage in her creative journey. She is a member of the Young Photographic Artists Studio and participated in several exhibitions, all while undertaking commissioned photographic work.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in art?

I always loved drawing and my parents took me to a lot of art exhibitions as a child, half of which I found really boring, but in hindsight I'd seen great stuff that inspires me to this day.

Can you share an important moment in your life or career that shaped your artistic or entrepreneurial path?

I put up my first solo exhibition in 2016, a multi-channel video installation titled Dream With Me, I Dream of You. This was my first project that I completely felt as my own, where I could realize what I had in mind.

What challenges have you faced along the way, and how did you overcome them?

Since I have two kids I feel like I really need to want it if I'd like to spare the time for any kind of creative activity, even to get my camera out. All of the applications I submit I do while someone's pulling my dress. At the time of day when people go to exhibition openings, I'm singing lullabies. But all this time I'm having lots of ideas and I try to work in my own tempo, letting myself be slow if I have to.

Beyond your creative pursuits, what are your other passions and how do they influence your work?

Most of the time I relax with some creative activity. I like to write, draw or embroider, or rearrange our apartment. Usually I make notes before taking photos as well.

Are there any women in the [art/fashion/business] world whom you consider role models?

I really adore the work of Sophie Calle, Elinor Carucci, Elina Brotherus, Tracey Emin, Rachel Whiteread (and a lot more)

What advice do you have for women who are aspiring to make a mark in the art world?

Research and looking for inspiration are important steps, but they can also have a paralyzing effect after a while. You can't and must not skip the experimenting part. And it's useful to have the ambition not to conform to an outsider's view but to your own taste.

What’s your go-to comfort food when you need a pick-me-up?

Smoked salmon bagel

Do you have a guilty pleasure TV show that you enjoy binge-watching?

I absolutely have nothing to do with basketball but I couldn't stop watching the two seasons of the (now sadly ended) Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.

If you could teleport to any place in the world right now, where would it be?

I would love to take some photos at Lanzarote or visit museums in New York.

What’s your morning ritual that sets a positive tone for the day?

I'm more of a night person, if I had the chance, I'd love to stay in bed for a while after waking up. But I also love it when my son wakes me up cheerfully and then I'm getting my coffee.

Describe your ideal creative space. What elements make it inspiring for you?

Bright lights, books and a random collection of small objects.

Do you have an unexpected or quirky talent that people might not know about?

I'm an okay singer and surprisingly I'm able to lift a lot of things with my foot when I'm holding a baby in my hands haha.
